This training program focuses on the “due diligence” expected of individuals who are in charge of a workplace or have authority over other workers. A brief history of the Occupational Health and Safety Act reminds the participants why the Act was created and how it came to be.
This training program also addresses workplace “safety culture” and individual / team “leadership” skills.

- Origin and Purpose of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
- Review key parts/sections and a list of applicable regulations under the act.
- Reasons/causes for injuries / illnesses / fatalities in Ontario.
- WSIB released statistics.
- The concept of the “Internal Responsibility System”.
- Recognition, assessment and control of hazards.
- Specific hazards associated with your workplace
- Competent employee - examine and discuss.
- Review duties and responsibilities of employer, employee, Health and Safety Committee members and Ministry of Labour inspectors.
- Discussion on the three fundamental rights of employees: right to know / right to participate and the right to refuse unsafe work.
- Risk Assessment / Hierarchy of control measures.
- Discuss the right to refuse steps under the Act.
- Discuss the building blocks of policies and procedures. Communicated / understood and enforced. Use of personal protective equipment as an example.
